NLDG Aims, and Mentoring

Hi!  I am the new facilitator for the New Librarians Discussion Group (NLDG).  I’d like to thank Carrie Eastman for getting the group started last year with the first meeting.  I’ve made a list of what the NLDG hopes to do.

The aims of the NLDG are:

  • To create a forum in which new librarians (and future librarians) can ask questions and express concerns about the profession;
  • To share experiences and ideas with one another;
  • To come and hear host speakers talk about their own experiences in all areas of library science;
  • To facilitate an informal mentoring program, if attendees express an interest.

The idea of mentoring is something that was presented at the executive committee meeting last Friday.  No one is sure what form it should take, and there was a lot of discussion about it.  My take is simple: informal and friendly.  I think it would be good if those new to the profession to meet and talk to seasoned professionals.  However, before anything is decided, I’d like to hear from the group to see if anyone is interested and to get some ideas.

Looking forward to tomorrow’s meeting at Mercy College

Well, we have a nice group, about 24, signed up to attend our meeting tomorrow morning.  (Mercy College-Manhattan, Room 737, 9-10:45 a.m.)  We will be having a guest speaker, Heather Saunders from Purchase College Library.  She is the art librarian there and has been there for just over a year.  I thought it would be nice to invite her to talk/reflect on her first year as a professional librarian.  She has been musing over sharing a bit of what she knows now and what it would mean if she knew it when she started.  This will definitely get the conversation rolling, and others have already shared their ideas of things to talk about too.   So, there will be plenty of meeting, greeting, conversation, discussion, and of course food, coffee and donuts. See you there!

See you this Friday, Oct. 2nd at 9 a.m. folks!

Just sent out the reminder for Friday’s meeting at Mercy College-Manhattan this morning.  We already have fourteen people say they are going to try to make it.  If you are thinking of coming, make sure Carrie knows so she can add you to the list the guard will have at the door on Friday.  See the post previous to this for all the details and links.

Please join the Association of College and Research Libraries, Greater New York Chapter (ACRL/NY) on Friday, October 2, 2009 for an open meeting of the New Librarians Discussion Group from 9-10:45 AM. Welcome to the ACRL/NY New Librarians Discussion Group site!

This site has been created for the ACRL/NY New Librarians Discussion Group.  The site is open to anyone, but is also a place for members to come to get information, ask questions and share news.  It is a work in progress, so if you have any suggestions for changes, additions, etc., please share.

Currently, I, Carrie Eastman, the Information Services/Interlibrary Loan Librarian at Purchase College Library am the group leader.  However, I do not intend to run this group by myself.   Yes, I take on the responsibility of organizing events, getting discussions going, and  keeping everyone informed and organized.  But, this group is run by its members.  So, if you have something you would like to see the group do, discuss, or get involved with, please do not hesitate to share it here.

Also, when you have a moment, take the time to visit some of the sites in the blogroll on the right.  We currently have links to the ACRL/NY, ACRL/NY Symposium, ACRL, and the ACRL/NY User Experience Group sites.  More will be added, suggestions are welcome.

I will be posting an announcement for our next meeting, Oct. 2nd, shortly, so check back soon.
